Roughly 200,000 Salvadoran immigrants in the United States are waiting to learn whether their legal protections will be extended, AP News reports. Hopes have risen among the group because the Trump administration has not made a public announcement about the program, according to AP News.
The protection at issue is Temporary Protected Status, which has shielded Salvadoran immigrants from deportation for decades. The Hill and The New York Times both reported that the administration is keeping TPS in place for El Salvador for now. The Washington Post, meanwhile, reported that TPS has expired for a different immigrant group that had been shielded from deportation for many years.
CNN reported that many of the immigrants affected have lived in the United States for decades and now fear their deportation protections are close to ending. AP News reported that the absence of public statements has raised expectations among Salvadoran TPS holders that their protections could be extended.
